Museum of Outdoor Arts: Mister Christmas Diorama

Christmas cheer comes in all shapes and sizes, and today I’m sharing one of the smallest holiday displays you’ll find in Denver this year.

It may be small, but this festive diorama outside Marjorie Park in Greenwood Village packs a mighty punch when it comes to Christmas cheer. Designed and created by diorama master, Mister Christmas, this fun display is full of wintry scenes made of recycled materials. The more you look, the more tiny details appear.

The best thing about this holiday diorama? It’s free to visit! So, if you’re in the Greenwood Village area (or even if you take a trip there from Boulder like I did) it’s a must see this holiday season.

Let’s check it out…

Housed in the Victoria Diorama display enclosure, this fun artwork is made up of multiple smaller dioramas, each depicting a festive Winter scene. Each diorama is made up of recycled materials including as vehicle parts, vintage holiday decorations, vintage radios and electronics, toys, lighting, and so much more.

On the right hand side, you’ll find a vintage blow mold snowman that rotates above a forest of bottle brush trees. Above the snow man a deer stands in a snowy scene based on (what I believe is) a vintage car part. Polar bears peer out of round holes and tiny buildings are housed inside of various containers. Higher up still, a cable car hangs above the scene.

On the left hand side, tiny mechanical skiers make their way around a snowy course lined with bottle brush trees. Upcycled clocks, tins, a decorative birdcage and a globe fill the lower part of the display. A large metal structure (upcycled from something I didn’t recognize) houses an ornate skyscraper, yellow taxi and tiny gardens.

The middle of the display features four levels of dioramas. At the very bottom a box (possibly an old tv?) houses a forest seen and a faux flame, giving the feeling of a fireplace. Perched atop this box is a toy piano with a model of Denver’s Union Station, a model train, and a tiny airplane that flies around in circles. Above this, a snowy village sits upon a shelf, At the very top, a yet sits in the middle of a Yankee Stadium light surrounded by glittery trees.

There’s so much to see in one small space and the whole display is quite delightful.

Wondering about the green enclosure that the display is housed in? This is the Victorian Diorama, a display case managed by the Museum of Outdoor Arts that features four seasonal displays throughout the year. Originally used as a carriage stop shelter in London during the Victorian era, it eventually made its way to Denver where it was used as bus stop kiosk for Fidler’s Green from 1980 through 2015. At this point it was converted to the Victorian Diorama, adding a touch of whimsy to the neighborhood.
