Wild Things: The Art of Maurice Sendak at Denver Art Museum

Do you have a favorite children's book illustrator?

Is it someone who brought your favorite childhood stories to life? Or maybe the books you read with your own children? Maybe both.

For many of us, the art work of Maurice Sendak holds a special place in our hearts. We grew up following Max on his adventures with the wild things that live in his imagination. A story that transcends generations and is beloved by so many since Sendak brought the characters to life in 1963.

If the art of Maurice Sendak has captured your imagination, just as it has mine, then a visit to Denver Art Museum to check out "Wild Things: The Art of Maurice Sendak" is a must. With over four hundred and fifty pieces of work on display, this exhibit features original sketches, drawings, paintings, book mock ups, set designs, theatrical costumes, final book designs, animation cells, promotional posters, and so much more from Sendak's 65 year career. The exhibit also contains items from Sendak's personal collection of works by artists and illustrators by whom he was inspired.

Let's take a look...

Natura Obscura

If you've been following along for a while you'll know that I'm a big fan of interactive and immersive art exhibitions. The kids and I visited quite a few of these sorts of interactive exhibitions and pop ups while living in the Bay Area, and we always thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Art is always more fun when you can be a part of it, right? So when I came across Natura Obscura, an immersive art exhibition in Denver, I knew we had to go check it out.

Natura Obscura, on display at the Museum of Outdoor Arts, is a self guided experience where visitors will find themselves immersed in six rooms of art, all with a link to nature. When you step through the doors, you're taken to a dream world, where forest spirits light up under black light, messages on the floor and walls lead the way, fairy tales comes to life, and soft music creates a calm atmosphere.

52 Weeks: Week 19

Week 19: Art Show

Last Thursday we visited an art exhibition featuring our very own little artist.

Students at Ava's school take part in an art education program with teachers from Kala Art Institute here in Berkeley. Now that the school year is coming to an end (eek!) the educators at Kala have put together an exhibition of work created by all students at Ava's school. Unlike a regular school art show that would generally be on display in a school auditorium, this exhibition is on display at the Kala Gallery. An actual gallery! How cool is that?

Last Thursday was the opening night of the exhibition so we headed to the Kala Gallery to check out the artwork on display.
