Recently I've been spending a bit of time in Longmont, and one of the things I love about this northern Colorado city is the abundance of street art.
You guys know I'm a sucker for a good mural, and Longmont has a lot of them, so today I'm sharing my favorites with you. I've also put together a handy map to help you find all of these murals, so make sure to read to the end for the link.
Like in many cities, Longmont's murals can mostly be found in the downtown area. Most of the murals included here can be found along or behind Main Street between 3rd and 10th Avenues. Some of these artworks were created as part of a mural project, such as the small music themed murals found along East Alleyway behind Main Street between 3rd and 6th Avenues, but many are stand alone murals.
Let's start with the afore mentioned musical series. These small murals can be found adorning the brick wall surrounds that keep dumpster hidden from view. There are seven murals in total, and each one features a a disco theme.
As you walk along East Alleyway, you'll find many other murals including the iconic "Spirit of the Plains" bison. Some of the murals relate to the business they adorn, and some are not actually even murals at all, like the sculptural books on the brick wall below.
Main Street itself is also home to many large murals with varying themes that all pay tribute to life in Colorado. You'll find sports stars, flora and fauna, cultural celebrations, native American culture, and local icons featured.
Not all murals are located outside! Within the Old Town Marketplace on Main Street you'll find several large murals dotted throughout the space on both the lower and upper levels. Make sure to take a walk through the entire space to see them all.
The Main Street area features several pedestrian walk ways that lead between the rear alleyways on either side of Main Street. Along the walkway on the eastern side on Main street between 3rd and 4th Avenues, you'll find the "Longmont's Story mural project. This piece features multiple murals that detail the story of Longmont starting with the area's Native American story, through farming and the railroads, through to the 20th century.
On the western side of Main Street, the murals continue along the back alleyway and along Coffman Street one block over. You'll find plenty of color as well as interactive murals in the form of wings to pose with.
Further afield, yet more murals can be found at the Village at the Peaks outdoor shopping mall. The shopping mall is quite large, but the murals are condensed into one small area where you'll find the Nothing Bundt and Ozo Coffee stores. Coffee, a sweet treat and murals!
Want to find all of theses murals for yourself? You're in luck, because I have created a handy map which features all of the murals and their locations. You can find it at the link below:
