The Catrinas are back at Denver Performing Arts Complex!
In celebration of Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead), Denver Center has collaborated with Mexico City based costume and set designer Ricardo Soltero and Cooperativa Jaen Cartoneria to bring these towering beauties to Denver as part of the Catrinas en mi Ciudad exhibition.
The exhibition features colorful Catrinas (the tall, highly decorated female skeletons), Calaveras (decorative skulls) and various sculptures that pay homage to Mexican culture.
I love all of the color and the cultural aspects of the Catrinas and Calaveras, and especially enjoy the contrast of these pieces in such a modern, urban environment. Each pieces shines and adds a touch of wonder and delight to the complex.
Catrinas en mi Ciudad is on display through November 4th, so there are just a few more days to check it out. Can't make it? Consider this post the next best thing!
Many of the installations are repeats from last year's exhibition, but they've been given new homes around the complex, which makes them feel a little different. The details are the same, but how they interact with their space is all new.
As well as the repeat installations there are a few new ones to be seen, including the large painted dog sculpture and the hummingbird skeleton.
Let's take a look at what's new this year.
The towering, ornate Catrinas are always a favorite. They're a little spooky, but also very beautiful. Their long flowing dresses move gently in the breeze, creating a feeling of life within their bony facade. The Catrina with the giant skirt made of marigolds adds an interactive touch, with visitors able to walk through her skirt. Likewise, the giant partial skeleton upstairs can be walked through as well.
Most of the Calaveras on display are the same ones from last year. Last year, many of the Calaveras were on display in an area where I was able to walk around them and check out the painted designs from all angles. This year, many of those same calaveras are on display on a ledge over a restaurant, so it's a little trickier to take in all of the details. If you'd like to see them close up, check out my post from last year by clicking here.
Catrinas en mi Ciudad is on display at The Galleria at Denver Performing Arts Complex, 1400 Curtis Street, Denver.
The exhibition is open daily from 7am to 10pm, and runs through November 4th 2026.
Entry is free.
