A Fintastic Voyage

One of our all time favourite places here in California is the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

We visited the aquarium back in April last year and we all absolutely loved it. You can see our visit here. It's such a wonderful place to visit and we hope to go back again one day soon.

So when I discovered that Monterey Bay Aquarium has a mobile display here in the Bay Area over Summer we were all pretty excited.

Today I took the girls to explore the ocean in the Fintastic Voyager, an airstream trailer converted into a "submarine on wheels".

Captain Ava and First Mate Lola

In this submarine we were treated to a short film of life under the sea through porthole screens. The film starts with our submarine floating atop the water ready to dive down to the dark depths below. As our submarine descends we are treated to views of a variety of sea life including schools of fish, hammerhead sharks, an octopus, jellyfish, moray eels and our favourite, the vampire squid. The girls watched in awe through their porthole as the fish swam past us. After diving down 3000 feet we come back up to the surface and our journey under the sea was done.

Lola was pretty excited to see fish swimming toward her - and excited about her stickers!

Below are a few short videos I shot with Vine during our submarine voyage.

The submarine's periscope offered views of playful sea otters frolicking on top of the waves. The girls were particularly taken by this and enjoyed watching the otters play - even though Lola couldn't reach on her own!

Back outside the submarine after our little adventure the girls took it in turns being the captain, complete with captain's cap, for cheesy photos. The girls were also given stickers and luggage tags by the friendly staff.

Ahoy!

Look, there's a periscope sticking out the top!

The Fintastic Voyager will be visiting locations around the Bay Area and Sacramento from now until early September. You can find a list of locations and dates here: http://montereybayaquarium.tumblr.com/post/54112240821/take-a-trip-in-our-fintastic-voyager-americas

It's not every day you see a submarine on Market Street!
