This time of year, Breckenridge is awash with color thanks to the golden aspen trees whose leave shake in the breeze and shimmer in the early Fall sunlight.
But the color in Breckenridge doesn't stop at Fall foliage! In fact, it gets a LOT brighter inside the Old Masonic Hall on Main Street, thanks to the new Breck Create exhibition Other Worlds.
And by bright, I mean bright!
Other Worlds is a whimsical exhibition that features a forest of creatures, both real and imagined, by artists Sadie Young and Hadley Hooper.
I recently checked out Other Worlds, and I so excited to share it with you here on the blog.
Let's take a look...
As you can see from the photos above, the artworks on display feature two very different styles. The crochet and fiber based sculptures by Sadie Young are incredibly colorful and based purely in imagination. The artworks by Hadley Hooper feature real forest creatures depicted in a storybook illustration style with hidden details. Very different styles, but linked through whimsy.
Each artist's work takes place on a different floor of the Old Masonic Hall, with Sadie Young on the ground floor and Hadley Hooper on the first floor.
First up, let's look at Sadie Young's art.
If you've been here a while, you'll probably recognize Sadie Young's work from other posts that I've shared. Her fiber art sculptures have appeared in the Denver Art Museum (which you can see here) and her own gallery Spectra Art Space (which you can see here and here).
Sadie's artwork features two large crocheted monsters that stand in a forest of ornate and colorful trees. The tall creature stands on two legs and walks with a staff. It feels reminiscent of a Nordic cryptid with its horns and colorful body. Flowers with eyeballs surround its feet. The second sculpture stands on six legs and gives the impression of a floral insect with eyes on stalks and flower ruffles lining its back. Its large, open mouth is filled colorful lights and little pieces of paper with messages written on them.
The creatures stand in a forest of trees with aspen-like trunks covered in eyes, and round ornate tops. Seating is available underneath the trees, and sitting back and looking up is a must!
The walls of the gallery feature tufted floral displays with mirrors that light up with words of affirmation.
The upstairs gallery space features Hadley Hooper's illustrated forest. Visitors feel as though they are entering a forest with a log cabin, trees lining the walls, and animals hidden amongst the foliage. A large table fills the center of the room, and visitors are encouraged to relax here with a board game, read, or just enjoy each other's company. The illustrations on the walls feel right off the pages of a picture book, and while most of the aspects are two dimensional, the occasional animal sculpture leaps out of the wall, adding extra depth. A rustic piano sits in the corner encouraging visitors to add music to the space.
Outside the forest space, large coral like sculptures by Hadley Hooper sit above the staircase.
Other Worlds is on display at Breck Create, at the Old Masonic Hall, 136 South Main Street, Breckenridge.
The exhibition is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10:30am - 3:30pm, now through April 2027.
Timed entry tickets can be purchased online at https://breckcreate.org/events/other-worlds or at the door if available. I was able to do a walk in when I visited on a recent Saturday afternoon.
Tickets are $10 for adults. Children ages three and under are admitted free of charge.
There's no time limit to how long you can stay in the exhibition, however, re-entry is not allowed.
