Denver's Fairy Doors

Did you know that there's a fairy village hidden in Denver?

Well, it's not exactly hidden, per se, but you do need to know where to look.

Denver's South Pearl Street shopping district is home to thirty whimsical fairy doors that are sure to delight the young and young at heart.

We recently spent a few hours on South Pearl Street searching for the fairy doors and enjoying some tasty treats from local stores along the way.

Let's take a look...

My favorite things about the fairy doors on South Pearl Street is that they are all so different from one another. Before we went searching for the fairy doors I had an image in my head of what I thought they'd look like, and while some of them did fit the classic fairy door mold, most were very different. So many different materials have been used to create the fairy doors. Some look like they're straight out of a magical woodland with pebbles, moss and rustic wood, while others are fresh and modern. Some are built of industrial materials like corrugated iron and metal iron.

Some of the doors have been designed to fit in with the business on which they can be found. A fairy door made of frame pieces on a framing store, a mini fairy bar on a brewery, a miniature version of a restaurant, a fairy hair salon on hair salon, a door made of kitchen utensils alongside a cafe...

While most of the fairy doors can be found outside along the street, some are a little harder to find. You'll find yourself needing to look around corners, behind fence pillars and on verandahs. Some fairy doors are down low and some are up high. Some stand out as pops of color along a plain wall while others blend in with their surroundings. Some are even hidden in what look like mailboxes. The trickiest one, however, is located inside Stella's Coffee. A staff member will need to help you find it because it is hidden behind a frame piece on the wall!

Street Wise Boulder 2021

Ok, by now you know I'm a big street art fan!

One thing that really surprised me when we moved to Colorado is the wealth of street art here. Both Boulder and Denver have some really great murals and if you been following along here for a while (or on Instagram) you're sure to have seen a lot of fun murals popping up in my posts. When we moved here from the Bay Area I honestly thought we'd be saying goodbye to colorful walls, but it's been such a fun surprise to find so much creativity and color here in Colorado. It's not all hiking and mountains!

In fact, street art is such a big part of the culture here in Colorado that there are several street art festivals held each year. In the past I've shared Colfax Canvas, Babe Walls and Crush Walls here on the blog (and lots on Instagram), and today I'm sharing another street art festival and one that's a little closer to home. It's Street Wise Boulder!

Street Wise Boulder is a week long "ARTivism" festival run by Street Wise Arts in September each year. Since it's beginning in 2019, the festival has added a ton of color to the walls of Boulder, but that's not all it has added. The festival and the murals have a strong focus on social justice, celebrating cultural diversity, and making art accessible. The artists involved come from a multitude of backgrounds and cultures.

Easter 2020

Did you celebrate Easter this past weekend? Was it very different from your usual Easter celebrations?

Our Easter certainly was very different for us, and not because of the Coronavirus. As I shared in my previous post, we always celebrate Easter at home by ourselves, so there was no difference in that respect. What was different, however, was that we had a white Easter! Yep - it snowed here in Colorado! It was quite a lot of snow too and it continued all through Sunday and most of Monday.

The snow didn't stop us from celebrating though. In fact, an Easter egg hunt in the snow was much more entertaining than our usual Easter egg hunts. The kids loved it and I have to say that I did too.

Here's a look at our Easter Sunday...

ICE! at Gaylord Rockies

It's January, but it's still looking an awful lot like Christmas around here!

Christmas may have been and gone, but the holiday fun continues a little longer here in Colorado with many Christmas themed displays and events on until next week, or in some cases, even longer. One such Christmas event that is still on for a few more days is the ICE! exhibition at Gaylord Rockies. We visited yesterday and it was such a fun experience.

Gaylord Rockies is a huge hotel and convention center located close to Denver International Airport. It's a popular spot with families, both visitors and locals alike, due to their large range of on site activities. There's a water park there that the kids are keen to check out, but that will have to wait until Summer! For now, the attractions that got our attention were more on the frosty side of things.
