Shaving Cream Easter Eggs

One last Easter post before the season is over...

Did you dye Easter eggs this year? We usually go with the traditional dipping eggs into dye technique, but this year we decided to try something different that I had seen online. This year we colored our eggs with shaving cream!

Ok, so the shaving cream itself didn't color the eggs itself, but it did work as a handy carrier for the food coloring that we used. And it was fun to use!

Now, I will be the first to admit that our eggs didn't come out quite as expected, but it was still such a fun activity that I wanted to share it here with you anyway. When it comes to art and creativity, sometimes the process is just as important as the outcome, and that's especially true when the process is fun! This sure was a fun, and rather messy, process! The messy processes are always the best ones, right?

The girls had a blast decorating their eggs, and while I'm sure they would've loved to have seen the marbled patterns from the shaving cream appear exactly the same on their eggs, they were still perfectly happy with how they turned out. I've since learned a few tips and tricks that we'll try out next time, so expect to see us getting messy with shaving cream and food dye again next Easter!

Ok, let's take a look at how to make shaving cream eggs...

Easter 2021

Easter is done for another year. Did you celebrate over the weekend?

This year's Easter was quite different from last year's Easter in one major way. Nope - nothing covid related. This year we had a beautiful, warm and sunny Spring day. Last year we had a snowy Easter. While I was happy for the good weather, I've got to say that I actually really liked our white Easter last year.

Anyway, the warm weather meant that we could do more of our regular Easter activities outside. We decorated eggs outside, had our egg hunt outside, and smashed cascarones (confetti eggs) on the trampoline.

Let's take a look...

Easter 2020

Did you celebrate Easter this past weekend? Was it very different from your usual Easter celebrations?

Our Easter certainly was very different for us, and not because of the Coronavirus. As I shared in my previous post, we always celebrate Easter at home by ourselves, so there was no difference in that respect. What was different, however, was that we had a white Easter! Yep - it snowed here in Colorado! It was quite a lot of snow too and it continued all through Sunday and most of Monday.

The snow didn't stop us from celebrating though. In fact, an Easter egg hunt in the snow was much more entertaining than our usual Easter egg hunts. The kids loved it and I have to say that I did too.

How we Celebrate Easter at Home

Easter is coming up this Sunday. Are you ready for it?

I've been seeing a lot of discussion on social media about how to celebrate this holiday while sheltering in place. Parents wondering if the Easter Bunny should still visit. How can they make the holiday special for their kids while staying home. Maybe, Easter should just be cancelled altogether.

I have to admit that these discussions have left me a little confused. Sure, we can't meet up with other people, but apart from that how is Easter any different this year? As expats with no extended family in the same country (or hemisphere) our Easters are always celebrated at home with just our immediate family. To me, this is our normal, so Easter this year will be no different than any other year. In fact, this is also how I remember my family celebrating Easter growing up - although my Grandma did come and stay with us for Easter each year. Given that "normal" is different for everyone, I did a little digging and discovered that for many people Easter is celebrated with extended family and friends, as well as with community events. Without these events and the ability to visit family a lot of people are stumped on what to do to make Easter special.

Seeing as Easter at home is normal for us, I thought I'd share some of the ways that we make it a special day for the kid. As we're not religious most of what we do revolves around the Easter bunny and chocolate.

Easter 2019

Time to play catch up with a look back at our Easter celebrations...

Things have been pretty crazy around these parts with travel, conferences, parties, some major changes coming up, and just general life taking up pretty much all of my time. If you've been following along with my Instagram stories you'll know what I mean! And if you're not following along with my Instagram stories make sure to check them out here.

Anyway, back to Easter...

Easter Ideas Round Up

Easter is almost here again and as always the girls are super excited about it. I mean, what's not to love about a holiday that involves a bunny delivering chocolate eggs! Such a strange concept when you think about it, isn't it?

Easter is usually a time that I go a little overboard with all of the preparations: colouring eggs, baking hot cross buns, making decorations, helping the Easter Bunny to leave a trail of footprints... This year, however, Easter falls one week before our little one's due date. With all of the baby prep I've been busy with, Easter has taken a bit of a back seat. Plus getting much done with this giant belly isn't the easiest. I look like I've swallowed a basket ball sized Easter egg!

I'm still hoping to work on a few simple Easter crafts with the girls but in case we run out of time (my doctor seems to think our little one will come early!) I thought I'd share a round up of previous years' Easter ideas.

Sparkly Easter Bunny Footprints
One of the most popular posts of all time on Little Hiccups has been my DIY for Sparkly Easter Bunny Footprints. Every year the Easter Bunny leaves a trail of footprints behind him when he visits our apartment. I'm hoping I'm not in hospital over Easter this year as the Easter Bunny won't be able to leave his telltale prints and Ava just may catch on!

Easter Egg Bunting

I'm getting a little behind with my posts of late so I must apologise for just how late this one is - especially considering it's an Easter post!

We're in the process of looking for a new rental home and it's really eating up all my time. Fingers crossed we get the perfect little home that we found this weekend. More on that later. For now let's have a look back at this Easter post I never finished...

--

I really like Easter. No, not just for the chocolates - although the chocolate is one of the highlights. My favourite thing about Easter is the opportunity it gives me for getting creative. A quick look through Pinterest and you'll find all sorts of crafty Easter inspiration. Ok, so there's no such thing as a "quick" look through Pinterest. We all know what a time sapper that site can be!

I had great plans for all of the creative things that I was going to work on this Easter but then life (i.e. suddenly having to look for a new home) got in the way. I did however manage to squeeze in a few little craft activities so here's a look at the first one... Mini Egg Bunting.

Happy Easter 2013

Happy Easter!

We had a lovely Easter Sunday at home yesterday. The Easter Bunny visited over night leaving treats for the girls, we made a mess throwing confetti eggs at each other, we wore bunny ears, we hunted for eggs in our courtyard, and hunted for even more eggs downstairs at Trader Joe's.

Here's a look at our Easter Sunday for 2013...

As expected the girls both woke up nice and early, eager to see if the Easter Bunny had visited. As soon as they stepped out into the living room they could see that the Easter Bunny had indeed been as he'd left behind a trail of sparkly footprints. That messy bunny!

Be very, very quiet... We're hunting Easter Eggs!

It's Easter Sunday! Time to hunt for eggs!

Back home in Australia we always hunt for chocolate eggs. The Easter Bunny hides them in our backyard and we search for them as early as possible before the sun turns them into a runny, chocolatey mess! Here in America where foil covered chocolate eggs just aren't as common kids search for real eggs, albeit brightly coloured ones!

Ava and I coloured eggs ready for our hunt on Saturday afternoon. It was loads of fun and a new creative activity for us to do together. You can read about it here.

Now, as we share our outdoor spaces with lots of other people the Easter Bunny was unable to hide our eggs when he visited over night. He was a little worried that other children in the building might find them first. So instead it was up to me to hide the eggs in our shared courtyard garden after breakfast. Our garden turned out to be perfect for an Easter egg hunt. Enough plants and rocks to hide eggs behind, but not too big or over grown for the eggs to go missing in.

Rainbow Eggs

This year Ava and I coloured eggs for an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday. Back home we always have an Easter egg hunt with chocolate Easter eggs. As chocolate Easter eggs are scarce around these parts we decided to go the American way and hunt for real eggs - dyed in unreal colours!

Happy Easter 2012!

It's Easter again - our first in America.

This year Easter hasn't felt as much like a big deal. Not because we are away from friends and family, but because Easter just doesn't seem to be that big a deal in America. Quite strange considering how religious much of the country is.

Unlike in Australia, Easter is not a four day weekend for everyone. Some companies choose to give their staff the day off for Good Friday (or Passover) but there's no such thing as Easter Monday. Store trading hours over the weekend pretty much remain as per usual. Some stores are closed on Easter Sunday, or they may have reduced hours for the day but other than that it's just like any other day. One plus of this is that, unlike at home, one can actually buy alcohol on Good Friday. No outdated rules here about that one!

The lead up to Easter has also been much more subdued here in America. In Australia Easter eggs and hot cross buns hit the stores as soon as the Christmas decorations come down. Here the stores wait until early Spring before the Easter goodies hit. I guess this is due to Valentine's Day falling between Christmas and Easter. And even once the Easter goodies and window displays appear it's nothing like the "EGGstravaganza" that we get at home. First of all, Easter eggs as we know them don't really exist in America. There are indeed chocolate eggs but they are mostly the small bite size variety, either solid or filled with caramel or peanut butter. The Easter Bunny was not able to find any hollow foil covered eggs here in Berkeley. I've been assured by a few locals that they do exist but I certainly didn't see any in my travels. The favoured Easter treat here seem to be Peeps - neon coloured marshmallow creatures on a stick. Blergh to that, I say :)

Like Easter eggs, hot cross buns are a rarity here. I've found one bakery selling individual hot cross buns but they just weren't the real thing. The hot cross buns in question were more like a finger bun in disguise. The cross was even made out of icing! Sure they were delicious but not what I want for Easter. Especially not for breakfast! I ended up making my own hot cross buns which were delicious and a fun activity for Ava and I during her Spring break from preschool.
