My Favorite Holiday Books for Kids

Can you believe that Christmas is less than a week away? Where has December gone?

While this holiday season may feel very different for a lot of people, there are plenty of ways we can make the holidays as festive as always. We've getting festive by checking out holiday light displays, decorating our house (inside and out), baking our favorite Christmas cookies, watching holiday movies, and reading lots of holiday books.

Reading holiday stories together is a great way to connect with family and if you've got young readers it's educational too. Shh... don't tell the kids! Grab your favorite books, some Christmas cookies and a hot chocolate, and get cozy on the couch together. You can even involve family who are far away by reading together over video chat. There are so many great holiday books out there for kids of all ages, so today I'm sharing some of our favorites with you.

Environmentally Friendly Products for Earth Day - and Every Day!

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. I will make a small amount of money if you shop through these links, however it will not cost you any extra. Thanks for your support!

Today is Earth Day!

Mathilde has been learning about helping the environment in her school work today and that's got me thinking about the things we do around our home (and out and about) to help mother nature. Recycling, shopping with reusable bags, using refillable water bottles, cleaning with environmentally friendly products, walking or biking instead of driving, getting our milk delivered in reusable glass bottles direct from the dairy... There are so many easy actions that we can take to do our part to protect the earth.

Today I'm sharing some of my favorite products that we use (or have used in the past) to do our part in helping the environment. As always, click the product name to shop!

Here's a look...

Around the home

There are so many small changes you can make at home to be more environmentally friendly. Planting a water wise garden, turning lights off when you leave a room, hang washing out to dry, turning the water off while you brush teeth, installing water saving shower roses and toilets, recycling and composting, switching over to energy efficient light bulbs, washing laundry with cold water...

Below are some products that we use around the home to lower our carbon footprint. I hang most of our washing out to dry rather than putting it in the dryer, and this handy clothes line holds a surprising large amount of washing. It also folds up quite compact for storage. When it comes to cleaning I like to use products that are available in refill packs to cut down on waste. Reusable paper towels and dishcloths are handy too. Reusable silicone bags are a great alternative to single use plastics when it comes to storing food. When it's not possible to bring a reusable lunch bag home I like to use compostable paper bags to cut down on waste. Speaking of waste, we've cut down on soda bottles by using a soda stream machine at home. It also encourages us to drink more water.

🌳 Leifheit Pegasus Clothes Drying Rack
🌳 If You Care Compostable Food Waste Bags
🌳 Stasher Half Gallon Size Reusable Silicone Bag
🌳 Method Dish Soap Refill
🌳 General Electric LED Light Bulb
🌳 Seedling by Grove Reusable paper Towel
🌳 Lunchskins Compostable/Recyclable Paper Sandwich Bags
🌳 If You Care Reusable Paper Towels
🌳 Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaning Spray
🌳 Soda Stream Fizzi Sparkling Water Maker

Out and About

Doing your part for the environment can be just as easy when you're out and about as when you're at home. Pack a refillable water bottle so you won't need to purchase bottled water. Ditch the wasteful ziplock bags and pack snacks in washable silicone or fabric snack bags. These are great for dog treats when you're out walking your pup too. Speaking of walking dogs, don't forget the compostable pet waste bags! Much better for the environment than regular plastic bags. The dog snacks I've shared here are environmentally friendly too as they're made from food that would otherwise go to waste. The best way to do your part for Mother Earth when out and about is to ditch the car! If you're going too far to walk think about riding a scooter (it cuts our walk to school in half!) or riding a bike. A cargo bike is a great idea for lugging kids, shopping and other cargo. I had the older version of the bike pictured below and it was a great way to get around town with the kids.

🌳 Baggu Reusable Shopping Bag

🌳 Hydroflask 12oz Kids' Wide Mouth Water Bottle

Personal Care Items

Caring for the environment and caring for our bodies can go hand in hand. There are lots of great health and beauty products that are environmentally friendly, from products that cut down on wasteful packaging, products made from organic and sustainable ingredients, and products that replace single use alternatives. When it comes to washing hair, shampoo and conditioner bars are a great choice as they avoid wasteful packaging. You can store them in a soap holder and they're handy for travel too as they take up little space. Washing hair less regularly cuts down on water use, which is a plus for the environment, but it can lead to oily hair. Dry shampoo is a great option here but make sure to avoid an aerosol product. Removing makeup can be quite wasteful if you're using make up remover wipes or even cotton balls. I like to use the Make Up Eraser wash cloth to cut down on waste. I have no idea how it works, but it successfully removes even water proof mascara with just water! Periods can be pretty tough on the environment (and your wallet) when it comes to buying pads and tampons regularly. Period pants and menstrual cups are reusable options that create far less waste, save money in the long run, and can be a healthier choice with less risk of toxic shock syndrome than tampons. If you've got a baby in your family, or one on the way, consider switching to cloths diapers. They're a much better choice for the environment and they're substantially cheaper in the long term than buying disposable diapers. I used BumGenius diapers for both Lola and Mathilde, and they even went on to be used by a friend's baby after Mathilde no longer needed them. If you're not up for the extra washing, there are cloth diaper services available in most cities. They do all the dirty work for you and deliver clean diapers. To be honest though, I really didn't find cloth diapers to be much more work than disposables. Speaking of diapers, ditch the wasteful single use wipes and get yourself some snuggly soft bamboo or cotton wipes. I used the same ones for both Lola and Mathilde, and years later they still get used as face washers. You can simply use them with warm water to clean little bottoms or with a gentle cleansing spray. I used Tubby Todd Baby Fresh Spray for Mathilde. If you're nursing, consider using washable nursing pads instead of disposable. I found Bamboobies to be both comfortable and absorbent.

Halloween Style for Kids

It's October - one of my favorite months of the year!

The weather starts cooling down, there are fun Fall festivals, we celebrate Lola's birthday, and we end the month with a big bang on Halloween. Such a fun and busy month. We might even get our first snow this month if we're lucky - or unlucky, depending on your views on snow!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Having spent much of my life in Australia Halloween is still a huge novelty for me as we've only been celebrating it since we moved to the US eight years ago. This year will be our first year decorating our house for Halloween and we just might even get trick or treaters for the first time ever! I can't wait!

To get into the Halloween spirit, I love to dress the kids in Halloween themed gear. While I'm a big fan of dressing for the holidays, I'm not keen on buying outfits that are worn just once or twice. Instead, I like to buy cute Halloween themed clothes that can be worn all year round.

Today I'm sharing some of my favorite Halloween themed outfits and accessories. These are all perfect for Halloween but also for anytime of year. These are also all from some of my favorite small independent brands, so I love knowing that while I'm dressing my kids I'm also supporting some talented artists.

🎃 Whistle & Flute Kawaii Bat Sweater
🎃 Gunner & Lux Sugar Tote Bag
🎃 Whistle & Flute Glow in the Dark Kawaii Pumpkin T-shirt
🎃 Hello Shiso Spider Hairclips
🎃 Baby Teith Squad Ghouls Onesie

🎃 Hello Shiso Ghost Hairclips
🎃 Mochi Kids Kawaii Skull Tote Bag
🎃 Baby Teith Boo Monday T-shirt
🎃 Whistle & Flute Candy Corn Baseball T-shirt

Aren't these all cute? Perfect for Halloween or any time of year. My kids love the kawaii designs from Mochi Kids and Whistle & Flute, and this stuck in the 80s mama is quite fond of the Baby Teith designs inspired by some of my favorite bands.

Stay tuned for my favorite Halloween inspired style for grown ups coming soon! Kids shouldn't get all the fun to themselves, right?

Valentine's Style for Kids

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

Valentine's Day is almost here!

I'm a big fan of dressing my kids for holidays, but I like to buy styles that can be worn any time of year. Valentine's Day means lots of love hearts, red and pink - all styles that can be worn year round with a little mixing and matching.

Here are some of my favorite Valentine's Day items for the kids...

Small Lot Poppy Mary Janes
Aren't these just the sweetest little shoes? Perfect for Valentine's Day or any time of year. They come in gorgeous colors but poppy is my favorite. They also come in a gender neutral lace up oxford style.

Whistle & Flute J'Taime Beanie
This gender neutral beanie is perfect for any day of the year that calls for keeping you noggin warm! My favorite thing? It comes in both adult and kid sizing for twinning with your littles!

Primary Long Sleeve Dress
My go to basic dress for my girls! Like everything from Primary, this dress comes in a great range of colors with sizing up to 12 years. This raspberry color is perfect for Valentine's Day or any day for your pink loving kiddos.

Primary Rainbow Heart Pajamas
Primary pajamas are my go to when it comes to costume bases for Halloween (you can see how I've used them here and here) and with this new rainbow heart design they're now my favorite for Valentine's Day too!

I heart Guts Plush Heart
Ok, so this one isn't something to wear, but I couldn't resist this super cute plush heart. It may not be a love heart, but I still think it makes a cute Valentine's Day gift. There's a whole range of organs available. I bought Mathilde the plush tonsil after she had her tonsils out a few years ago and it's one of her favorite toys to cuddle.

Hello Shiso Hair Clips
Hello Shiso is my go to brand for hair accessories for my girls. The cute designs are perfect for any occasion and they make the most adorable gifts.

Rags Geo Heart Romper
If you've been following Little Hiccups for a while you're sure to have seen Mathilde wearing Rags rompers before. They're such an easy all in one outfit to throw on, they're super comfy and they come in great designs that are just a little off beat. This heart romper is perfect for Valentine's Day. It also comes in a matching t-shirt.

Mochi Kids Shooting Heart T-shirt
How cute is this kawaii heart graphic? This baseball style t-shirt is perfect for year round wear and I love the simple styling. I comes in tiny baby sizes all the way up to size 12 which makes it perfect for twinning siblings - which you know I'm all about!

London Littles Kings Cross Rainboots
Valentine's Day falls at a particularly rainy time of year here so rain boots are a must. Actually, these boots are so cute I think they're perfect to wear all year round. This red color looks great on both boys and girls, and is sure to make every outfit look cute!

Primary Reversible Twirly Skirt
Sometimes you just can't decide between pink or red for Valentine's Day, so why not go for both with this fun reversible skirt? These skirts are great for twirling and they're perfect for every day wear.

I hope this provided you with some fun inspiration for Valentine's Day!

Meaningful Gift Giving with Cool Effect

We all have that one person on our gift list who is impossible to shop for, right? For me, that person is usually my husband Kim, and with his birthday falling right after Christmas gift shopping for him is often doubly impossible!

It can be so easy to fall back on the good old socks, chocolates and gift cards (all perfectly fine gifts and most likely under our tree this year), but I prefer to give gifts that are a little more meaningful and out of the ordinary. Something that they wouldn't normally buy for themselves. Maybe even something that keeps on giving.

This year I've found the perfect gift for that impossible to shop for person on your list, and not only is it meaningful but it will make a difference in the lives of so many. Imagine giving your loved ones the gift of fighting climate change. With a Cool Effect gift bundle, you can!

Cool Effect is a not for profit platform that allows individuals to support carbon emissions reductions through funding carbon reducing projects world wide. Projects include building renewable energy wind turbines in Costa Rica, providing energy efficient cooking stoves in Honduras, educating farmers about rainforest sustainability in Madagascar, and building biogas digesters that turn cow poop into energy in India. The projects are varied but they all share the same outcome: a reduction in carbon pollution.

Just in time for the holidays Cool Effect have released aptly named gift bundles that are perfect for that hard to shop for friend or family member. Each bundle supports a particular cause with funds raised going to various projects. For example, the Big Fan bundle raises funds for renewable energy wind turbines, while the Brew-tiful Gift bundle supports farmers in coffee growing regions by providing energy efficient cooking stoves and working to protect 450,000 acres from deforestation.

My top choice for my gift giving this year? The Poo Package! You just know that one was a hit with my kids, right? The Poo Package helps families in India build their own biogas digesters to turn cow poop into energy. Just one biogas digester can capture enough methane to power several homes at a time. This saves families money and it cuts down on harmful methane emissions. It's a win for everyone!

Bundles are available for $25, $100 or your own chosen amount. Each Cool Effect bundle comes with a personalized certificate with the recipient's name, a personal message from you, and instructions and paper to build an origami creation that fits in with the theme ie. an origami poo with the Poo Package or an origami snowman with the Snowman Gift Pack. Seriously, how cute is that origami poo? My kids would go crazy for that! There is also the option to have the gift delivered via email with print at home PDFs - perfect for last minute gifting!
Head on over to cooleffect.org to purchase gift bundles for your loved ones and to learn more about the work that is being done world wide to help combat climate change.

This holiday season, let's gift a gift that truly does keep on giving!

Give the Gift of Music with Fender Play

Earlier this week I shared my favorite gift ideas for families that love adventure. Today I'm continuing the holiday gift theme and sharing another out of the ordinary gift idea.

If you have a music lover on your gift list this year, how about giving them the gift of learning to play guitar? Whether they're a complete novice or have a little experience, Fender Play is a fantastic learning resource that will have them playing in no time.

Fender Play is an online and mobile app that teaches budding musicians how to play guitar at home and at their own pace. The app offers not only hundreds of simple, instructor led song and technique lessons, but also the flexibility to learn where ever, and when ever, works best for you. Fender Play works on your home computer, lap top, tablet or phone. It truly is a flexible learning environment that can go anywhere with you and your guitar.

Fender Play's "bite size" lessons are structured to keep players inspired and motivated as they learn using the "Hear It, Learn It, Play It" approach. The app really is perfect for adults and children alike. The whole family could even learn together! Fender Play also allows parents to keep track of their child's progress, which is such an important part of learning any new skill.

Ava has been really keen to learn guitar for such a long time, but with her already busy after-school schedule of karate, swim team and student council we just haven't been able to find the time to fit in lessons. I love the idea of my kids learning a musical instrument as it's so beneficial to their overall learning and emotional intelligence (plus it's fun), but time constraints don't always make this easy. Being able to simply open an app on her tablet and start learning at home would definitely make things much easier. A new guitar and a subscription to Fender Play just might be found under our tree on Christmas morning. Shh... don't tell Ava!

Fender Play subscriptions are just $19.99 per month for all access. Just in time for the holidays, Fender have released pre-paid gift cards for 6 and 12 month subscriptions. Wouldn't a subscription to Fender Play make such a great gift?

Interested in trying out Fender Play for yourself? Click here to sign up for your free 30 day trial.

Do you play guitar? Or maybe another musical instrument? I always wanted to play piano or guitar when I was a kid so I'm thinking I might have to give the guitar a go with Fender Play too!

Gift Guide for Adventure Loving Families

Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Micro Kickboard. All photos and opinions are my own.

The holidays are just around the corner which means it's time to start thinking about gift ideas.

I'm a big fan of giving gifts that encourage the kids to get outside and play, even more so if it's a gift that encourages the whole family to play together. So today, I'm sharing some of my favorite gift ideas for families that love exploring, spending time outdoors and doing adventurous things together.

Stay tuned for a fun give away at the end!

Micro Kickboard Scooters
For our city living family, scooters are a handy way to get around town. They're faster than walking, more convenient than bike riding and they're a ton of fun! My big kids have been getting around by scooter for years, and thanks to Micro Kickboard, Mathilde and I have now joined them!

Ava and Lola ride the Sprite scooter which is designed for older children through to adults. It's a classic style two wheeled scooter that comes in a large range of colors. It's light enough for the kids to easily ride, but strong enough that either Kim or I could jump on and take it for a spin. The girls love that it has a handy kickstand so they don't always have to find something to lean it against when they get off.  Because the Sprite is lightweight, it's easy for the kids to carry around when folded too.

Mathilde rides the three wheeled Mini Deluxe which is suitable for children aged 2 - 5. The Mini Deluxe steers by pushing on the handle rather than turning it. It took Mathilde no time at all to pick it up. Just like a big scooter it has a rear brake, which is something missing from other toddler scooters on the market. And trust me, she zooms pretty fast keeping up with her big sisters so that brake comes in handy!

My scooter is the Micro Black which is the best selling scooter for adults. It's really comfortable to ride and adjusts to suit a large range of sizes which means that Kim is able to ride it too. One of my favorite things about my scooter is that my kids love that I'm joining in the fun with them instead of just watching from the side lines.

One thing I love about our scooters is they make for the perfect day out of fun. They're so easy to throw in the trunk of the car and take on adventures with us. Because the larger scooters fold up they take up very little room which means we can even take them on longer road trips and camping trips too. They're so much more convenient than taking bikes on our adventures, and just as much fun.

Wouldn't scooters for the whole family would make such a fantastic gift? Head on over to microkickboard.com for some great Black Friday deals with up to 40% off scooters for the whole family starting November 22. Don't forget the helmets for the kids.

Oh, and stay tuned for a fun giveaway at the end of this post!

Gifts for Peanuts Fans

Do you have little (or big even) Peanuts fans in your home?

My girls are huge fans, and with the release of the new movie they've been pretty excited to see a lot of Peanuts merchandise hitting the shelves. Of course, Charlie Brown, Snoopy and co have always been in stores, but right now there are a lot of great collaborations around with some of our favorite brands. It's great to find a few Peanuts products that go beyond the usual low quality character stuff out there.

I thought I'd share some of my favorite Peanuts items with you, just in time for Christmas shopping.

1. Hanna Andersson Peanuts Backpack
Hanna Andersson backpacks are perfect for every day school use. They're really well made, have lots of useful pockets and come in a great range of designs. I couldn't go past this Peanuts backpack for Ava. She loves it! With the new Peanuts movie out we get stopped all the time by parents asking where her backpack is from. I have a feeling she won't be the only kid in her school with this backpack for much longer!

2. Baby Gap + Peanuts Mittens
What can I say? These Charlie Brown baby/toddler mittens from Gap are adorable!

3. Gap Kids + Peanuts Sweatshirt
I just had to buy these Snoopy sweatshirts for Ava and Lola when I saw them. I was even tempted to buy a larger size for me! The pattern is cute without being too cutesy and they are super comfy. They look great with a pair of leggings - just maybe not the matching leggings! These are now on sale and are going fast so if you want one you'd better get in quickly.

4. Gap Kids + Peanuts Printed Leggings
Because it never gets overly hot (or cold) here in the Bay Area my girls wear leggings all year round under dresses or skirts. Usually they just stick with plain colors, but I couldn't resist these Snoopy print leggings. In fact, I bought these in almost every size so the girls can wear them for years to come! Just like the coordinating sweatshirt, these leggings are no on sale and going fast.

5. Gap Kids + Peanuts Sweater One Piece
Perfect for the littlest Charlie Brown fans this Winter! I am so tempted to buy this for Mathilde. The whole Peanuts range at Gap is adorable.

6. Hanna Andersson Peanuts Long Johns
Hanna Andersson pajamas are the best! They are made from the softest cotton and are so snuggly. The quality is fantastic and they can be passed down from sibling to sibling. They come in a huge range of designs including a few Peanuts themed Christmas designs which are all pretty gender neutral.

7 & 8. Itty Bitty Peanuts Characters
These cute little stuffies from Hallmark make the perfect stocking fillers. I have even used them in our advent calendar this year (which you can see here). They're available in Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and Linus.

9. Classic Stuffed Snoopy
Every Peanuts fan needs a Snoopy to cuddle! Mathilde has this particular Snoopy from Hallmark and he's so soft and cuddly with no dangerous small parts, making him perfect for the littlest Peanuts fan.

10. Peanuts Holidays Through the Year book
This book from Hallmark is a lovely collection of all the Peanuts holiday stories throughout the year. My girls love reading the stories that they recognize from the classic Peanuts holiday movies.

11. Hanna Andersson Peanuts Short Johns
For when it's not quite cold enough to wear long johns, Hanna Andersson have their classic pajamas available in a short version. Like the long johns, the designs are pretty gender neutral.

12. Moleskin Peanuts Weekly Notebook Planner
Moleskin pocket sized planners are my go to diary every year. They fit perfectly in the front pocket of my diaper bag yet they have enough space for writing all of my appointments etc. Usually I just go with boring black, but for 2016 I'm going with Snoopy!

13. Cambridge Satchel Company Peanuts Mini Satchel
Umm... I NEED this satchel!

14. Peanuts Mini Notes
These little notes are great for writing little letters to Peanuts fans. Ava has a set of these are they are adorable. They'd be perfect for lunch box notes.

There are so many other great Peanuts collaborations out there too. Lacoste have a range of Peanuts polo shirts (which Kim may be finding under the Christmas tree), OPI make Peanuts nail polish, Coach have a range of Peanuts handbags (these are from 2014 and may be tricky to find), and there is a fun Snoopy game available for Wii, XBox, Playstation etc (which may also be under our tree this year).

I hope this guide helps you find the perfect gift for your little (or big!) Peanuts fan this holiday season.
