Cartoon Heart Valentines Box DIY

Ok, so Valentine's Day is over for another year and I'm a little behind with posting this DIY, but rather than think of it as being late, let's call this post inspiration for next year, shall we?

This Valentine's Day I'm down to just one kid celebrating with their class. That means less work for me, but it was also quite the downer knowing that my years of helping the kids with creative projects is coming to an end. Only three more years of class Valentines left. 

This year we kept the valentines themselves quite simple. Mathilde handed out packs of Pocky with a simple label saying "Valentine, let's stick together". Get it? Pocky sticks? You can find the template for the labels here. We did put a bit more effort into the Valentines Box though.

Mathilde has been quite enamored with the cartoon style cakes that have been all over social media lately. You know the type - they're brightly colored with black outlines that give the impression of a two dimensional cartoon when view from certain angles. Luckily she wanted her Valentines box to look like a two dimensional cartoon rather than a cake - which would've been much more time consuming to create. Ooh... a cake Valentines box would be pretty cool though, right?

Valentine's Day Round Up

Valentine's Day is almost here again!

While I'm not really a fan of lovey-dovey mooshy things, I am a fan of any holiday or event that gives me a chance to get creative, and Valentine's Day is one such day!

Now that Lola has moved up to middle school, I'm down to just one kid celebrating Valentine's Day with their class. Only three more years worth of making Valentine's boxes and goodies for classmates. 

I'm looking forward to getting creative with Mathilde and can't wait to show you what we create, but in the meantime, I'm sharing a look back at all the different things we'd made for Valentine's Day in the past...

Worm Hugs for Valentine's Day

 Are your kids celebrating Valentine's Day with their classes this year? 

I know it's all a little different this year with so many kids doing home learning. We're lucky that our schools have opened back up again and the kids have been back in person part time since January. With the kids back in school that means we were able to hand out valentines to classmates just like every other year. There were no class parties and no yummy treats to share, but I'm so happy the kids got to take part in something they look forward to every year.

Usually we'd give out some sort of home made treat, but with the pandemic I wanted to avoid giving out food. So this year we went with worms on a string. Not sure what worms on a string are? They're neon colored fluffy "worms" attached to a piece of clear string. Sometimes sold as party favors; sometimes sold as cat toys! They look absolutely nothing like a worm (as you'll see in the pics), but they are pretty cute. I'm not generally a fan of giving out little plasticky, throw away toys, but I figured they were a safe bet plus the kids had been asking for some for themselves to play with at home. Lola and Mathilde had their class parties on Thursday and apparently the worms were a hit.

With the worms ready made, there wasn't an awful lot of DIY for these valentines, but I did design a cute label for the packaging, complete with a cheesy saying. Actually, we came up with two cheesy sayings for our worm valentines, so Lola went with one and Mathilde with the other. I know you're dying to hear what the sayings were, so here they are. Lola went with "You've wormed your way into my heart", which some of the kids found a little creepy! Creepy's good, right? Mathilde went with "worm hugs", which no one found creepy, because it's not creepy. That said, if a giant worm gave me a hug I probably would be a little creeped out!

Ok, enough talk, let's see those valentines...

Here's what you'll need to package up the worms the way we did:
Worms on a string
Cello bags 3" x 4"
Sticker paper/Shipping Labels
Rotary circle cutter
Label template:
"Worm Hugs"
"You've wormed your way into my heart"
 

There aren't really too many steps for this one. Download the label template from the links above and print the number you need onto sticker/label paper. There are 6 labels per page. Use a rotary circle cutter or a pair of curved scissors to cut out the labels and write the names on each one. Curl up the worms and place each one into a cello bag. Fold the cello bag over and seal with a label. Voila! 

If you don't have any sticker paper you can always print onto regular paper instead and attached the label to the cello bag with a glue stick. If you go down this route you'll want to tape the cello bag closed first to make sure it stays in place while the glue dries. 

Now all that's left to do is hand those wiggly little suckers out to classmates or friends!

A Rainbow Valentines Box

This year the kids and I made Valentines boxes for the first time ever.

At our previous school in California the kids made either bags or boxes to collect their class Valentines as a school project rather than at home, so it wasn't something I ever had a hand in. When I learned that we'd be making them at home this year I knew it was a chance to get creative.

Having never made a Valentines box before, or knowing what was really required, I did a lot of searching on Pinterest (complete aside - if you're not following Little Hiccups on Pinterest, head over by clicking here and follow for lots of great ideas). I found a huge range of ideas, mostly made from shoe boxes. The problem was, we don't have shoe boxes. I don't tend to keep them when we buy shoes. We do, however, have tons of larger boxes from buying new furniture for our house. These boxes were all way too big to use on their own, but perfect for cutting up to create something new.

But what to make was the question...

I figured it would be easiest to make the same thing for both Lola and Mathilde, so I put my thinking cap on to come up with interests they both share. The first thing that popped into my mind was rainbows. Perfect!

Using my standard pinata creating techniques (which you can see in a really old post here) I got to work creating a basic rainbow shape out of cardboard. Once the structure was done, the girls glued on a ton of tissue paper, and voila... we had rainbow Valentines boxes!

Whistling You a Sweet Valentine's Day

Ah, school Valentines...

Hands up if you're still scrambling to get goodies sorted out for your kids to hand out to their classmates!

Don't worry - I am totally there with you! I'm also here to help with a super simple DIY that's sure to be a hit with the kids.

This year for Valentine's Day Lola and Mathilde were keen to make the strawberry heart meringues that we made last year (you can find the recipe here). Lola will be making them later this week for her class, but unfortunately Mathilde's class was required to bring in their Valentine's goodies today. That meant that I had to come up with a non-perishable option for her to hand out instead.

While ordering Chupa Chups lollipops on Amazon for Ava's recent birthday party something caught my eye. It was a treat that I loved as a kid and hadn't seen in an awfully long time. Melody Pops! Do you remember those? The lollipops that double as a whistle and actually change notes when you move the stick. As soon as I saw them I knew that they'd be perfect for class Valentines and my head started filling with ideas for cheesy card text - because a Valentine's gift isn't a Valentine's gift without a cheesy card attached, right?

Anyway, I ordered those suckers (pun totally intended!), made up a simple backing card with a cheesy Valentines caption, Mathilde wrote "Love Mathilde" on each and every card, and I stuck everything together. Voila! Valentines sorted!

Here's what you'll need (with shoppable links):
Melody Pops lollipops
White Card Stock
Cutting Knife, Ruler & Cutting Mat or a Paper Trimmer
Adhesive Dots
Baker's Twine
Darning Needle

I use these supplies for so many different crafting purposes so they're not just a one off purchase. You'll be able to use them all for a lot of different activities. They're all great basics in a crafting kit.

You'll also need the template for the backing card which you can download here.

Print the backing cards on card stock and cut them out with either a paper trimmer or a cutting knife and ruler. If you do a lot of cutting I highly recommend investing in a paper trimmer or guillotine. It saves so much time.

I made sure to leave space at the bottom of the design for kids to write a small message, so get your kids involved personalizing each card. Trust me, they'll complain, but they've got to do something, right? 

Take an adhesive dot and stick it to the back of a Melody Pop, then place the Melody Pop down onto a card. The adhesive dots hold pretty well, but I decided to add a little extra reinforcement (and an extra detail) by also tying the Melody Pop stick to the card. There are always random candies sitting loose at the bottom of the Valentine's box each year so we want to avoid that happening.

To tie the Melody Pop stick to the card, thread the needle with the twine, poke it through the front of the card along side the stick and then back through the card on the otherside of the stick. Cut the thread about 1.5" on each length and tie a bow.

Now repeat this 30 times (or however many kids you need to make them for) and you're done!

See that rainbow below? That's Mathilde's Valentine's Day box. Isn't it cute? This was our first year making Valentine's Day boxes and I had a lot of fun being creative with the kids (Lola made one the same). I'll be sharing the DIY soon. Spoiler alert, it's pretty much exactly the same as my pinata DIYs!

Valentine's Day Round Up

January is finally over - and that means that Valentine's Day is almost here!

Strawberry Meringue Hearts for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is sneaking up on us again so I figured it was about time I shared the treats that the girls gave out to their classmates last Valentine's Day. I know, I know... always on time!

For her 8th birthday Lola had an emoji themed birthday party (which you can see here) and one of the biggest hits with the kids were the poop emoji chocolate meringues that I made. I totally need to share THAT recipe here too. I'll get there! Anyway, I made up an extra batch of the poop emoji chocolate meringues to hand out to her classmates to celebrate her birthday at school and they LOVED them. I'm talking kids coming up to me every day at drop off asking if I had more of them to hand out. Kids love sugar!

Anyway, when it came time to work on Valentine's treats for Lola's class I just knew that we had to modify the poop emoji meringue recipe into something a little more fitting for the day. What could be more fitting than pink love hearts? With cutesy eyes, of course! Needless to say, they went down a treat. In fact, Lola is keen to make them again this year for her new class.

These tasty little treats are super easy to make and look the part for Valentine's Day, so today I'm sharing the recipe with you.

Valentine's Style for Kids

Valentine's Day is almost here!

I'm a big fan of dressing my kids for holidays, but I like to buy styles that can be worn any time of year. Valentine's Day means lots of love hearts, red and pink - all styles that can be worn year round with a little mixing and matching.

Candy Heart Key Chains

Valentine's Day is just around the corner so the girls and I have been busy getting our craft on!

With dietary restrictions at school (no candy or nuts allowed) and several classmates with food allergies we decided to come up with a non-edible gift for the girls to give out on the big day. In the past we've made heart shaped bath bombs and packets of wildflower seeds, or "seeds of love" as we labelled them, and they've been popular with the kids. This year the girls wanted to make something inspired by the classic conversation heart candies. While the candies themselves don't taste all that great, they are rather cute and perfect for Valentine's Day.

We've been working with Sculpey Clay quite a bit lately and it's a medium the girls really enjoy playing with. It's also the perfect medium for making faux conversation heart candies! We thought about making badges or hair clips (similar to the ones we made for Pride and Fourth of July last year) but decided to mix things up a little and go with key chains. Kids at our school seem to love hanging decorative key chains from their backpacks so I'm hoping these will be a hit with Ava and Lola's classmates. They can hang them on their backpacks or use them to hold keys. Maybe even the key to someone's heart! It's Valentine's Day - I couldn't help but add something cheesy to the backing card!

I love dressing my girls up for specific holidays but I'm not a fan of buying clothes that are only worn once or twice. Did you celebrate Valentine's Day yesterday!

Valentine's Day is a holiday that we never celebrated before we moved to America. Back home in Australia, Valentine's Day is really just for couples - and I am not into all that lovey-dovey stuff! But, here in America, Valentine's Day is also celebrated in schools with kids giving out small gifts to their classmates. While I'm not into the lovey-dovey couple side of the holiday, the getting creative with the kids to make gifts for their classmates side is something I have totally embraced!

This year Ava and Lola gave out personalized cards with small heart shaped balloons attached. As always, I couldn't help myself and just had to add a cheesy greeting. To be honest, the cheesy greetings are my favorite thing about Valentine's Day! Here's a look at their cards...

Bath Bomb Hearts for Valentine's Day

Today Ava and Lola will be celebrating Valentine's Day a little early with their classes at school (they have both Friday and Monday off school). There will be all sorts of fun love themed crafts and activities throughout the day in both of their classrooms, but we all know that the best part about celebrating Valentine's Day at school is, of course, sharing Valentine's gifts and cards with classmates!

This year the girls will be handing out home made heart shaped fizzy bath bombs that we made together. I'm so happy with how these little beauties turned out. And the smell! Ah... I've been bagging them up this evening and I can't tell you just how nice our apartment smells! Mmm... lavender and rose. They smell so good.

Making bath bombs may seem a little daunting, but they're actually pretty easy as long as you follow the instructions. Speaking of instructions, I'm sure you're wanting to know just how we made these so here you go...

Valentine's Day Style for Little Ones

I have to admit that I'm a bit of a sucker for themed clothing for the kids when it comes to events and holidays. I don't tend to go overboard and do try to keep it subtle enough to wear at other times of the year, but the theme is always there. A bat or ghost t-shirt for Halloween, a snowflake sweater for Christmas, a tractor t-shirt for a harvest festival, a lion bib for Chinese New Year.... This year we'll have love heart t-shirts for Valentine's Day thanks to Dallas Clayton's collaboration with kids' clothing label Rags to Raches.

Admittedly, I originally bought the t-shirts because I saw the matching toddler romper on Instagram and just knew that Mathilde needed it. It is just so freaking adorable and we're all big fans of Dallas Clayton here. Then I saw the matching kids' t-shirts and I knew that Ava and Lola needed one too. Then I saw the matching adult t-shirts and thought, what the hell, I need one too! I did stop short at buying one for Kim though. I do have my limits when it comes to matchy-matchy. Ha!

Anyway, when the t-shirts and romper arrived I was just going to put them on the girls straight away, but then I realized that with their motif of love they'd be perfect gifts for Valentine's Day.

That got me thinking about some of my other favorite kids' clothing that would be perfect for Valentine's Day and I just had to share them here with you.

1. Happy Socks

Swedish label, Happy Socks make... well, happy socks! Our whole family wears these bright, colorful  my favorite socks for the whole family. The designs are always fun and the quality is high. Many of the designs are available in kid's, women's and men's sizing so the whole family can wear the same designs. These kid's heart socks make a cute Valentine's Day gift.

2. Whistle & Flute JE T'AIME Women's & Kid's Pullovers

Ok, more matchy-matchy here! Whistle & Flute make the cutest t-shirts and sweaters and this design is perfect for Valentine's Day without being all about love hearts. Not sure I'd wear a sweater with "I love you" written on it, but in French it has a certain je ne sais quois! Ah, I'm so corny! Mathilde and I just received these sweaters and I can't wait to be twins! 

3. Mini Boden Hotchpotch T-Shirt 

I'm a big fan of Mini Boden for a splash of color in the girls' wardrobes The Hotchpotch t-shirts with contrasting sleeves are always my favorite and this particular red and pink design is just begging to be worn for Valentine's Day.

4. Rags to Raches + Dallas Clayton T-Shirt

Like I said earlier, we're all big fans of author and illustrator Dallas Clayton in our house. The hands reaching up design is one of his most instantly recognizable designs. You might remember the matching mural that Lola and I posed with in Los Angeles. The purple heart is a nice change from red and pink. 

5. Kram Heart Overalls

All over hearts for the littlest ones! These cute overalls from Swedish label Kram are available in a few different colors but red and white feels just right for Valentine's Day. There are also dresses, tops and diaper covers available in this fabric. Lola has the matching dress in brown and white.

6. Whistle & Flute Kawaii Heart T-Shirt

More cuteness from Whistle & Flute! I love the simplicity of this heart design. How can you resist that cute little smile?

7. AlbaBaby My Spencer Dress

I love the retro styling of this AlbaBaby dress. Mathilde has the matching overalls in bright orange and she looks so incredibly adorable when she wears them. She also looks straight out of the seventies! That big heart on the pocket is adorable any time of year but especially so for Valentine's Day.  

8. Whistle & Flute JE T'AIME Beanie

Valentine's Day falls at a pretty chilly time of year here in the Northern Hemisphere so protect that head with a cute, lovey dovey beanie. Just like the matching sweater, this style comes in both kid and adult sizes.

9. Tattly Three Hearts Temporary Tattoos

Temporary tattoos are always a big hit with kids and Tattly make THE best. This heart design is super cute and would make a great Valentine's gift to hand out to classmates. We've done this in the past with Tattly tattoos.

Valentine Heart Sun Catchers

Last Friday Ava had the day off school so we took it as an opportunity to do a little decorating for Valentine's Day. We made red and pink, sparkly heart shaped sun catchers for our windows. They are super simple to make but look really effective.

Valentine, You're a Catch!

This year Ava's class at school was not allowed to give out sweets for Valentine's Day.

I had planned for Ava to give out marshmallows just like Lola but seeing as they contain "just a little" sugar(!) we had to go with another idea. Ava was still keen to give out something to eat so we decided to go with good old Goldfish crackers.

Ava couldn't just give out a bag of Goldfish though. There needed to be a card with a cheesy saying to go with it. I'm all about the cheese when it comes to Valentine's Day!

So Ava posed for photos pretending to hold a bag of fish, I added a cheesy saying in photoshop, printed out the cards, added an actual bag of fish (well, Goldfish crackers) and, voila.. Valentines done.

Squishy Marshmallow Hugs for Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

This year I had hoped to share the valentines that the girls gave out at school a little earlier as inspiration, but that didn't happen! Inspiration for next year, perhaps. I have a couple of Valentine's Day posts coming today but to start off with, here's a look at what Lola gave out to her preschool friends...

Lola was keen to give out something sweet. She was also keen to be my little helper in the kitchen. I had originally planned to make heart shaped gummies but only after I'd purchased all of the ingredients did I realize that they needed to be kept refrigerated. Not the best idea for school perhaps! With a huge box of gelatin on hand I looked into other ideas and came across recipes for marshmallows. Soft, squishy, sweet - perfect for Valentine's Day!

 

Marshmallows are surprisingly easy to make and contain only a few ingredients. Lola and I made up a couple of batches, I designed a simple bag topper, she wrote out the names and I bagged the goodies. All done within one afternoon. Easy peasy.

Seeds of Love for Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

The girls have a day off school today for Lincoln's Birthday (followed by President's Day on Monday - 4 day weekend!) so the Valentine's Day celebrations at school were held yesterday.

Here's a look at what Ava gave out to her classmates...

For me, Valentine's Day is a great excuse to work on something creative with the girls. Candy and sweet things are always off limits at school so we always need to come up with something else. This year I settled on an idea quite early and luckily the girls were both pretty excited about it. Inspired by the Tears for Fears song "Sowing the seeds of love" (if that doesn't show my age, I don't know what else would!) I came up with an idea to give small packs of flower seeds as Valentines gifts.

Happy Valentine's Day!

This has been our second Valentine's Day in America and therefore only the second time we've ever done anything to celebrate it. Well, the kids have celebrated it, that is. I still can't bring myself to fall for all that mushy, lovey-dovey couple stuff that Valentine's Day means for so many people. I do however, like that kids celebrate all of the people they love on this day. 

We started our day with lovely little bouquets of hyacinths for the girls. As you can see below Lola was pretty excited about her flowers!
